SANTO DOMINGO – The United States Government is troubled by reports in the media indicating that some congressmen yesterday requested that national police “to summarily execute” and “take down” suspected criminals.
Like many Dominicans, we are saddened and concerned by recent incidents of crime. Nevertheless, any call for the extrajudicial killing of suspected criminals is not a reflection of a just democratic society nor is it a solution to crime. Those who are tasked with legislating and enforcing the law have the highest responsibility to adhere to it. The United States Government stands with responsible Dominican leadership in our staunch commitment to the respect for rule-of-law and human rights. We join the many voices who condemn this call for operating outside the due process of law.
