U.S. Embassy and Dominican Ministry of Defense Sponsor Medical Mission from Walter Reed Military Hospital

The United States Embassy in Santo Domingo, the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Health are sponsoring the Eleventh Medical Mission for Reconstructive Surgery from Saturday 11 April to Thursday 23 April.

The medical team is headed by Walter Reed Military Hospital from the United States and the Children’s Hospital Dr. Arturo Grullon in Santiago. This is the second year the medical mission is held in Santiago and provides free medical care and surgeries to treat  cleft lip, cleft palate reconstruction, maxillary surgery and craniofacial deformities in underserved children and teenagers (from 6 months to 18 years).

During the first phase, the medical teams will assess potential patient cases on Saturday 11 at the Armed Forces Central Hospital in Santo Domingo and on Sunday, April 12 at the Dr. Arturo Grullon Children’s Hospital located in Santiago starting at eight o’clock in the morning throughout the day. While patient cases will be evaluated in Santo Domingo and Santiago, surgeries will be performed exclusively at the Dr. Arturo Grullon Children’s Hospital only.

Over nineteen health professionals both military and civilian will participate from the Walter Reed Military Hospital in the United States. These include: plastic surgeons, therapists, orthopedists, anesthesiologists, one language pathology specialist and pediatricians working alongside their Dominican medical professionals’ counterparts. An estimate of 120 patients will benefit from the free surgeries and medical care.

Each year at the request of the Dominican Republic government, the Unites States Embassy in Santo Domingo in collaboration with the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Public Health sponsors these medical missions.
