It is with profound sadness that I learned this morning of the death of my colleague and fellow American Ambassador, Chris Stevens, and three other American officials in Bengasi, Libya yesterday. As President Obama noted this morning, these four public servants exemplified America’s commitment to freedom, justice, and partnership with nations and people around the globe, and stand in stark contrast to those who callously took their lives.
I have been touched by the many Dominicans who have reached out to me today to express their condolences and their support, and I call on all our partners in the Dominican Republic to condemn this outrageous attack. As we stand united with the families of those we have lost, let us now redouble our own efforts to carry their work forward.
